CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Something has to give when Illinois and Rutgers square off in a game matching two of the worst teams in the Big Ten. Both are looking for their first conference victory after dropping their first two. The Illini have lost three straight overall, and Rutgers has lost two in a row, including a 56-0 rout by Ohio State before last weekend bye. Despite the lopsided defeat, Illinois coach Lovie Smith says his team shouldnt underestimate the Scarlet Knights and their new offensive coordinator on Saturday. Ive known Jerry Kill for a long time, Smith said. I know he added something to their offense. Kill offense has been led by senior Kyle Bolin, although coach Chris Ash said that he may start a different quarterback against Illinois. Bolin spent four years at Louisville before becoming the starter for the Scarlet Knights. So far this season, he has three two-interception games and just three passing touchdowns. He has yet to record a 200-yard passing game at Rutgers and the team is averaging just 149.2 passing yard, second-worst in the Big Ten. Illinois has its own problems at quarterback Smith started Chayce Crouch through the team first four games, but switched to Jeff George Jr. after a lack of passing production. In his first start of the year against Iowa, George had career highs with 22 completions and 247 yards, but he also threw three interceptions in the 45-16 loss. Over the past two seasons, George has thrown 10 interceptions and just five touchdowns. He knows he will need to be better to pick up a win. As a quarterback you can play 72 great snaps Julian Pinnix-Odrick Jersey, George said. And then you have three or four bad plays that are game shifters. Still, George praised his offensive line after he was sacked just once by the Hawkeyes. Illinois also rushed for a season-high 200 yards against Iowa, its highest total since the Rutgers game last season. However, Rutgers run defense has been a lot more formidable through five games than it was last season. The Scarlet Knights are allowing 150 rushing yards per game as opposed to 264.2 last year. If Rutgers can keep Illinois rushing attack in check, it could help Ash and his squad snap a 15-game losing streak in the Big Ten. Coming out of the bye week, I feel like were in pretty good shape mentally and physically right now other than a couple spots, Ash said. INJURED ILLINI Defensive back Tony Adams and running back Mike Epstein were both injured against Iowa and their availability against Rutgers is uncertain. Adams has started in every game this season and Epstein leads the team with three rushing touchdowns and 346 rushing yards. OFFENSE TO DEFENSE In the past two weeks, Ash has moved two of his wide receivers over to the defensive side of the ball. Rashad Blunt and Jawuan Harris will play at defensive back against Illinois. Ash believes both players athletic ability can add depth to his secondary. NEW COORDINATOR Kill, a former head coach at Minnesota, is in his first year as the offensive coordinator at Rutgers. He is trying to turn around an offense that was ranked last in the Big Ten last year at just 283 yards per game. TAILBACK DUO Rutgers has two running backs this season that have already eclipsed 200 yards, and they could cause problems for the Illini young defense. Gus Edwards leads the team with 302 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Robert Martin has 209 yards and a TD, and last week he became the 14th player in program history to amass 2,000 rushing yards. ALTERED ROLES Running back Dre Brown made his college debut against Iowa, but it was not in the backfield. Since Illinois already has a few running backs ahead of him on the depth chart, Brown was featured on special teams and will most likely remain in that role against Rutgers. Former QB Crouch caught one pass for seven yards against Iowa and Smith is likely to use him in different ways as the season goes on.

  • Florida State routs Delaware State 77-6
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Florida State had not scored over 30 points this season before facing Delaware State J.J. Cosentino Jersey. The Seminoles accomplished that early in the second quarter on Saturday and didnt let up in a 77-6 rout. The 71-point win is the second-highest margin of victory by Florida State , falling three points shy of tying the 74-0 win against Whiting Field in 1949. The 77 points also ties for the second-most points the Seminoles have scored in a game The school record is 80 against Idaho in 2013. Im proud of our guys, we played a complete game, coach Jimbo Fisher said. We dominated the game, but we should have dominated the game and we went out and played and did it and there something to that; playing for four quarters. The victory keeps Florida State hopes of making a bowl game for the 36th consecutive season still alive. They need wins at Florida next Saturday and against Louisiana-Monroe on Dec. 2 in order to be bowl eligible. Weve just got to feed off this week and bring it into next week, said Ermon Lane, who was one of nine FSU players to score a touchdown. Weve just got to continue doing what we are doing and compete. Delaware State was competitive for the first 10 minutes. A Nyfease West 1-yard touchdown run brought the Hornets within 14-6 with 404 remaining in the first quarter before FSU scored the final 63 points. The Seminoles would lead 56-6 at halftime, which tied a school record for most first-half points . They took control by scoring a touchdown on six of their first eight possessions. Florida State also accomplished a rare trifecta in the first quarter, scoring touchdowns on offense, special teams and defense. That is the first time the Seminoles have done that in the same game since 2013 against Wake Forest. The Seminoles opened the scoring on a Jacques Patrick 14-yard touchdown run and extended their lead to 14-0 when Tarvarus McFadden took a blocked field goal 63 yards. The Hornets got the ball back with a chance to tie the game at 14, but Derwin James picked off Keenan Black and ran 41 yards for his first career touchdown. James Blackman completed 11 of 15 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns for FSU. Ryan Green and Patrick also ran for a pair of scores. The Hornets gained 125 yards on their first two drives but were held to 67 the remainder of the game. Black played quarterback in the first half and was 7 of 18 for 98 yards. Obviously you never want to get beat like that, Delaware State coach Kenny Carter said. When you make mistakes early early and you are playing a team that has superior talent it hard to overcome that SHORTENING THINGS UP The teams agreed to play 10-minute quarters during the second half. NCAA rules state that at any time during the game, the playing time of any remaining period or periods and the intermission between halves may be shortened by mutual agreement of the opposing head coaches and the referee. It is the seventh time since 2012 a game has been shortened in the second half. It is the second time involving Florida State . You dont ever want to embarrass and humiliate anybody. There no sense in that, so we agreed to do that, Fisher said. THE TAKEAWAY Delaware State Coach Kenny Carter and his team can claim at least one moral victory. The touchdown marked the first time in nine games that an FCS team had scored a first-quarter TD on the Seminoles Ro'Derrick Hoskins Jersey. Florida State Players who normally dont get snaps got a lot of playing time. Sophomore fullback Gabe Nabers and redshirt junior wide receiver Justin Motlow got their first touchdowns, while senior running back Ryan Green got his first TD since 2013. Motlow is the first member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida to score a touchdown for Florida State. UP NEXT Delaware State Season complete. Florida State Travel to Florida on Saturday. It is the first time since 1959 that both teams go into the game with losing records.
  • Arizona Place is precisely a working day absent in opposition to taking part in inside its 1st NCAA Match recreation mainly because 2014. With a brutal conclusion in the direction of the year, the Devils fell instantly upon the bubble and will be using element within the 1st 4 Wednesday evening in just Dayton versus the Syracuse Orange.Considering the fact that we aren way too acquainted with Syracuse, we talked John Cassillo in excess of at Nunes Magician toward Deliver us an within just see upon all elements Orange. And because they haven noticed much too a lot ASU , we answered some issues for them as very well that can be learned listed here, as properly as at the backside of this write-up.Here John alternatives together with his predictionHouse of Sparky asks Nunes Magician Jordan Kaye ASU contains not fared nicely versus the zone security this time, and Syracuse might be the simplest at operating it. What must ASU hope in opposition to Syracuse zone?John Cassillo Syracuse zone thrives upon duration, and this year employees incorporates a good deal of it, primarily at the in advance locations. Both equally shields, Tyus Fight and Frank Howard are in a position in direction of disrupt ball stream in the vicinity of the 3-reality arc, and Howard led the ACC inside steals this year with 1.88 for every sport. The reason of the Orange zone is towards stress unattainable images and employ up a large amount of year. If by yourself can buy further than the shields, youl be funneled immediately into the heart. Paschal Chukwu is no offensive hazard, still does ordinary 2.67 blocks for each video game. This is not the highest suffocating zone wee at any time experienced, yet the youthful team taken towards it suddenly and is surprisingly hectic even though pouncing upon blunders. Settling for threes is often a lousy option for rivals.JK The Solar Devils performed versus preceding Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkinsstaff members, and zone, at Washington. Is that rather significantly what ASU can hope, or is Washington zone a little bit substitute?JC Hopkins isn as a great deal of a zone diehard as Boeheim includes develop into within the latter section of his profession. The Orange just transitioned towards staying a 100-per cent zone employees within the very last 10 years and variance, and Hopkins consists of been beautiful community pertaining to not leaning upon it as significantly, based upon the staff.Nevertheless, he applied it fairly generally this period, and it been productive. UW roster comprise fewer year inside of it than Syracuse gamers, and your self can look at the breakdowns within just flow versus season toward year. Theye additionally not just about as extensive, which suggests it depends much more upon quickness than wingspan, as Syracuse zone does. Hitting versus exterior or remaining appropriate versus the paint are 2 methods toward buy the zone out of desired destination and unfold a small as well skinny.JK Including ASU, Syracuse begun the period exceptionally incredibly hot and then cooled down after meeting participate in obtained transferring. What modified?JC For Syracuse, it was even more a solution of competition than anything at all else, then the damage and sudden departure of Geno Thorpe strike an by now-skinny Orange roster. With 5 wholesome gamers maximum evenings, it places a ton of miles upon Fight, Howard and Oshae Brissett, highest of all. That not a scenario for a sport or 2. Still does develop into a difficulty above the prolonged haul .JK How should really ASU shift relating to preventing Cuse safeguard Tyus Overcome?JC Combat can be extremely resourceful with the basketball, still is least difficult at the time he guiding the lane and making use of the entirety of the flooring. If youe ready in the direction of maintain him working upon the perimeter, his comprehensive activity will heading put up with. Competition that contain fairly gotten at the time him more than the a few-fact arc with some stress consist of taken care of in direction of reduce him .JK Who is a smaller sized regarded participant for the Orange that ASU supporters should really be nervous above?JC I imply, we include as a result pair nutritious avid gamers that your self need to recognize them all, however search out for Marek Dolezaj. He doesn have the gaudy stat traces of SU ig three, still the Slovakian freshman is a scrappy defender, competent rebounder and quietly suitable shooter as effectively. Dolezaj contains strike in excess of 52 p.c of his images this 12 months, and excels in just the mid-wide range. He was very important inside of the Orange opening ACC Match gain previously mentioned Wake Forest as perfectly, scoring 20 facts upon 6-of-7 capturing in opposition to the ground.JK How very well can Syracuse safeguards shield Tra Holder and Shannon Evans?JC Theye easy and incorporate assortment, as a result it not moving in the direction of be uncomplicated. Still the zone is heading towards focus towards hold them exterior the 3-truth arc. If it can conduct that, it must be plenty of in the direction of disrupt their video games a little bit. If not, the forwards will be in a position in the direction of go over the rim except if foul difficulties comes . The two gamers are dynamic scorers, normally, nevertheless not extremely effective shooters. That need to usefulness the zone focus in direction of acquire poor shot conclusion.JK Bobby Hurley performed towards Jim Boeheim at Duke and will presently be schooling versus him. Consists of Boeheim talked at all regarding that and how do on your own believe that their education layouts are alternative?JC Supplied Boeheim 42-12 months tenure upon the sidelines at Syracuse, Hurley considerably against the simply participant toward finish up teaching in opposition to Jim afterwards upon. Consequently it hasn actually appear up, and it shouldn genuinely incorporate a great deal impression upon the final result. As pointed out, Boeheim 100-per cent zone notice is a very present-day progress and it arrived soon after Hurley enjoying occupation. It not sure he be ready in the direction of just take a lot towards that zone and relate it towards this one particular.Hurley schooling design and style is certainly a lot more offensively powered, and that very clear within just how ASU will work upon that conclude of the surface Kyle Jones Jersey. Syracuse is made up of experienced Great offensive groups earlier mentioned the decades, yet every time the Orange are effective, a lot of that is powered through the successful enjoy upon the defensive finish. Against what Ie recognized of Hurley, that not automatically the situation for the Sunlight Devils. Continue to, theye almost certainly a little bit identical within courtside demeanor. Hurley can be inconsolable at instances, as can Boeheim, although Jim includes as well calmed considerably within current many years Ellis Jefferson Jersey. That noticeable hearth is the place theyl come across the highest popular floor as coaches.JK The Sunlight Devils incorporate experienced inconsistent perform in opposition to their bigs this time. Will Syracuse be equipped toward just take comfort of ASU within the paint?JC Indeed and no. If your shields can retain ours functioning upon the perimeter, the Orange are relocating in direction of offer your self suits with an in just-outdoors match. That even now led predominantly by way of the ig a few, towards Dolezaj or Chukwu, who are almost never bundled inside the offense. Defensively, Chukwu Really proficient of shielding the rim, however in addition struggles toward reside out of foul issue at days. If your self can attain him in direction of choose up a number of early, Bourama Sidibe is not almost the identical fashion of existence within just the paint. Without the need of foul hassle, count on additional competitive large males coming your course need to on your own accomplish the paint.JK PredictionJC The rate distinction involving such 2 groups may possibly generate for a exciting matchup of comprehensively contrary designs. Having said that, I believe the period benefit and long term zone struggles for ASU as a consequence are adequate in direction of create the big difference right here. With plenty of place in direction of get the job done within the paint, Syracuse seems a great deal further more fluid upon offense than optimum countrywide audiences incorporate recognized. The Orange deliver elements attention-grabbing as a result of hoping in the direction of destroy clock as well early, nonetheless at some point escape with a 74-70 victory right here.Nunes Magician asks Place of SparkyJC How relieved ended up Sunlight Devils enthusiasts toward pay attention they built the business? How possibly did it seem to be likely into Quantity Sunday?JK Soon after commencing the period 12-0, utmost followers, and specialists, experienced ASU currently penciled into the match. Then, Although it performed 9th inside of a mediocre Pac-12, greatest merely believed the Devils would be accepting a NIT bid, in particular considering the fact that a good deal of brackets experienced them as a very first 4 out staff. Thus, Whilst their popularity confirmed up upon that unpleasant range clearly show, a large amount of americans in just Tempe ended up really stunned, and normally psyched that seniors Kodi Justice and Tra Holder purchase in direction of knowledge the tourney.JC Any lingering animosity in opposition to the admirer foundation at the time our final NCAA Event convention? Or does that match not even sign-up?JK No, that sport is an afterthought in the direction of utmost Those I consider they understand that Syracuse was the much better employees. I didn incredibly watch everybody tweeting in excess of the real truth that this was a NCAA Match rematch, consequently we tweeted out everything and received 2 reactions 1. That ASU dropped. 2. That James Harden experienced a complicated evening .JC What produced the zone this kind of a combat for this Arizona Country personnel? Smaller sized protects, or is there extra in the direction of it than that?JK The initial groups that commenced throwing the zone seem at Arizona Place ended up Longwood and Pacific at the close of the non-meeting slate. Early upon, the Devils might simply shoot those people groups back again into taking part in male-v-guy Jeremy Smith Jersey. Pac-12 groups started out carrying out the exact toward ASU and carried out it considerably superior, and those people images that the Devils saved capturing towards check out and buy their competition again into male grew to become significantly further and added contested. Their protects are forcing 3s and their bigs are consuming dilemma doing the job down reduced every time the attain double-teamed.JC Normally, ASU was genuinely clicking at the commence of the 12 months what was the major element of that scorching early extend, and what was the most significant rationale for the limp to the entire?JK I imagine groups incredibly started off towards determine out ASU following the non-meeting year Ely Doyle Jersey. Aspect of that is displaying it a zone security and element of that is that the Devils bought everyone least difficult sport early in just Pac-12 participate in. The other factor that occurred was that ASU wasn rather killing groups versus further than the arc. It fight Xavier and Kansas via hitting upon 48 and 50 % of its 3s, respectively. Inside the Devils final 2 online games, they shot 37 and 40 per cent in opposition to deep.JC Do on your own truly feel together with there a person participant that can arrive in opposition to out of nowhere and move off against a few towards the Orange? We include a routine of permitting that occur.JK Oh, gentleman, there a pair adult men upon ASU that can, and contain, accomplished that this period highest appreciably ASU trio of senior safeguards Tra Holder, Shannon Evans and Kodi Justice. Nevertheless, if I simply just deciding upon 1 person, it consists of toward be Evans. He by no means noticed a shot that he didn believe he may perhaps generate, and he usually takes a whole lot of them. Evans incorporates taken 50 excess 3-suggestions than any other participant upon ASU and as soon as he knocks down one particular Robbie Robinson Jersey, a handful of excess typically comply with.JC Romello White and Dauon Lake are your most significant month-to-month rotation avid gamers. Do your self imagine their sizing as opposed in the direction of SU trigger any complications for possibly employees in just the paint? What do they do perfect upon the offensive and defensive finishes, respectively?JK I imagine the Orange defiantly contain the sizing benefit within the paint with Chukwu, Dolezaj and Brissett. Whiten and Lake contain struggled relocating up in opposition to adult males that are taller than them, fundamentally accurately using photos in excess of the rim towards slipping, yet as well upon the defensive stop. The two include experienced video games this time exactly where theyl choose up a barrage of fouls inside precisely a handful of minutes and scarcely choose back again upon the courtroom Christian Hill Jersey.JC What function will rate engage in within this match? Arizona Region is a single of the country utmost up-pace groups in accordance towards KenPom, although the Orange are... not .JK Tempo is relocating toward important, and I believe that that what ever staff members can extremely dictate there will be who wins. ASU requirements in the direction of operate and buy a good deal of specifics within changeover. As soon as it does that, it can toss a whole lot of info upon the scoreboard in just a Quite minor variety of period.Oregon, who is moreover versus the backside of that record, was likely the initially employees that actually tried out toward fight that. The Ducks would milk that shot clock, get an offensive rebound and then milk it all over again. ASU saved making an attempt in direction of just take its easy photographs, nonetheless couldn obtain out within just changeover together with it preferred. The Ducks finished up having 19 even further images versus the market in just that recreation, which is a unbelievably Fantastic indicator for Syracuse.JC Which Syracuse participant criteria oneself greatest? JK Defiantly Tyus Overcome, and for a handful of causes. He will become toward the line Incredibly from time to time, and I incorporate a viewpoint that maximum of individuals are transferring towards appear at the arms of ASU significant gentlemen. They can buy into foul dilemma straightforward, and with a defend that can motivation which includes combat, he may well be equipped in direction of just take a couple of ASU forewords out of the video game. Much too, ASU shields aren Pretty tall. It will be attention-grabbing toward perspective how they pay for towards shield and take by way of Beat.JC Mind upon Jim Boeheim?JK Specifically observing towards afar upon some ESPN online games and inside of the event, he reminds me a whole lot of Hurley in just text of their personalities. Each are incredibly fiery and active and search in direction of contain their gamers backs no make any difference what. However, contrary to Hurley, I consist of viewed Boeheim practice within March reasonably a large amount. He is aware of how in direction of just take groups geared up for acquire or transfer house matchups and appears to be like in direction of fare unbelievably effectively the moment he the underdog.JC Prediction year What takes place within this a person, and what the greatest ranking?JK ASU incorporates not appeared Excellent within just the final 3 weeks and it includes not been ready in the direction of break the zone this period. For that all towards difference upon Wednesday, it would consider an remarkable functionality against ASU. I consider the zone will conclusion up remaining way too substantially for the Devils and if Syracuse can rather sluggish down their offense, they don include significantly of a likelihood.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told ESPN before he left the field at halftime, Heck of a ballgame just like we thought. 546 p.m. SCORING UPDATE OKLAHOMA 17, CLEMSON 16 Oh, how good is this Orange Bowl so far Back and forth theyve gone, and its now Oklahoma back on top 17-16 after Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield hit Mark Andrews with an 11-yard scoring strike with 134 left in the half. The drive took only 46 seconds. The touchdown came one play after Mayfield under pressure found Dede Westbrook down the middle of the field for a 42-yard gain. Mayfield is up to 226 passing yards already. And be wary, Clemson Under coach Bob Stoops, the Sooners are 158-10 when leading at halftime. 539 p.m. SCORING UPDATE CLEMSON 16, OKLAHOMA 10 Greg Huegels third field goal of the game, this one from 43 yards, has put Clemson on top of Oklahoma 16-10 with 217 left in the first half at the Orange Bowl. Responding quickly after Oklahoma got a field goal to get within three, the Tigers needed just over two minutes to go 49 yards in nine plays. Huegel has been good from 26, 36 and now 43 yards. Deshaun Watson is carrying the Tigers, rushing for 105 yards and throwing for 78 more so far 533 p.m. SCORING UPDATE CLEMSON 13, OKLAHOMA 10 Austin Seiberts 22-yard field goal has gotten Oklahoma within 13-10 with 441 left in the first half at the Orange Bowl. The Sooners went 67 yards in 10 plays, snapping a run of 13 unanswered points by the Tigers. Clemson still leads in yards, 205-183 but Oklahoma needed something to stop the Tigers momentum, and got it. 525 p.m. Theres already been six flags for 15-yard offenses in the Orange Bowl, by the midpoint of the second quarter. Two of them didnt count, being of the offsetting unsportsmanlike-conduct variety Patrick Joyner Jr. Jersey. But four others went for 15 yards, including a sideline infraction against Clemson that helped Oklahoma big-time on the Sooners march to a field goal that got them within 13-10 with 441 left in the half. Both Oklahoma scoring drives so far were assisted by 15-yard penalties against the Tigers, the first being a pass interference on the games opening possession. 521 p.m. SCORING UPDATE CLEMSON 13, OKLAHOMA 7 The nations No. 1 team now has scored 13 unanswered points and leads Oklahoma 13-7 in the Orange Bowl, after Greg Huegel connected on a 36-yard field goal with 710 left in the first half. Huegel was going to originally face a shorter kick, but an intentional grounding penalty on third down pushed the Tigers back. Its the third straight drive that ended with a score for Clemson. Oklahomas last three drives have all ended with punts. 511 p.m. Clemsons Wayne Gallman is the Tigers new single-season rushing record-holder. Gallman came into the Orange Bowl needing just 14 yards to take over the top spot, and eclipsed that in the first quarter of the Tigers game against Oklahoma on Thursday. Gallman topped the mark of 1,345 yards set by Raymond Priester in 1996. 502 p.m. SCORING UPDATE CLEMSON 10, OKLAHOMA 7 Clemson has taken a 10-7 lead over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl and a fake punt was huge for the Tigers. Deshaun Watson scored on a 5-yard run with 1245 left in the second quarter, doing so after Clemson coach Dabo Swinney went to some trickery to keep a drive alive. Clemson punter Andy Teasdall rolled right as if he was punting one rugby-style, then deciding to throw back across the field to defensive tackle Christian Wilkins for a 31-yard gain. Two plays later, Watson scored to put the Tigers on top. 455 p.m. There were only two first-quarter penalties in the Orange Bowl, but both were costly. A pass interference call against Clemson helped Oklahoma on its touchdown drive on the games first possession, gifting the Sooners 15 yards on a pass from Baker Mayfield that seemed uncatchable. And an unsportsmanlike conduct call against the Sooners late in the quarter knocked them back 15 yards, out of field goal range. Penalties havent been a big issue for either team this season. Clemson came in averaging 48 penalty yards per game, Oklahoma at 61 per game. 450 p.m. Its the end of the first quarter at the Orange Bowl, Oklahoma still leading Clemson 7-3. And it looks like Clemson is in a bit of trouble. Star defensive end Shaq Lawson has missed the majority of plays in the first quarter, now with ice on his left knee and walking with a pronounced limp when he tries to move. Oklahoma racked up 100 yards in the first quarter, compared to 47 for Clemson. The Tigers trailed for 11 minutes, 16 seconds. Thats already the third-most time theyve spent playing from behind in a game all season. 437 p.m. SCORING UPDATE OKLAHOMA 7, CLEMSON 3 Clemson is on the board in the Orange Bowl. Greg Huegels 26-yard field goal with 350 left in the first quarter has cut Oklahomas lead to 7-3. The Tigers took advantage of a short field. They got the ball at the Oklahoma 28 after Sooners punter Austin Seibert shanked a punt from deep in his teams territory. After a pair of first downs, the Tigers had to settle for three points. 431 p.m. Clemsons Shaq Lawson is limping a bit, but still making plays for the Tigers. He just sacked Oklahomas Baker Mayfield on third down deep in Sooners territory, and then OUs Austin Seibert shanked a punt to set Clemson up at the Oklahoma 28 for its second drive of the Orange Bowl. Lawson wasnt on the field for most of Oklahomas first drive, when the Sooners scored for a 7-0 lead. He was out there for the second drive, and Oklahoma got nothing going. 418 p.m. SCORING UPDATE OKLAHOMA 7, CLEMSON 0 That didnt take long. Oklahomas Samaje Perine plowed his way in for a 1-yard touchdown run, and the Sooners took a quick 7-0 lead over Clemson in the Orange Bowl. The Sooners took the opening kickoff and went 75 yards in 10 plays. Clemson sacked Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield on the first play, but the Sooners recovered quickly. Two big third-down conversions fueled the drive a 17-yard run by Perine, and a 10-yard completion from Mayfield to Dede Westbrook. Clemson didnt trail for a single second in eight of its first 13 games this season. 410 p.m. At long last, its game time. Clemson has won the coin toss and will kick off to Oklahoma to open the Orange Bowl. For Oklahoma, this game is a chance to not just get to the national title matchup but finish avenging all that went wrong last season. The Sooners lost to five teams last year Kansas State, Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma State and Clemson. Theyve already beaten the first four on that list in 2015, and now get their shot at the Tigers in this CFP semifinal. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney looks more than ready to get this started, telling ESPN just before kickoff its going to be a heck of a ballgame. 345 p.m. If early arrivals into Sun Life Stadium are any indication, its a Clemson home game in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers are on the home sideline and are using the same tunnel that the Miami Dolphins use to enter the field, but they also have a decided edge over Oklahoma in fans at least using the highly scientific method of people wearing Clemson colors versus people wearing Sooners colors. Then again, it makes geographic sense. Clemson is about 750 miles from Miami Gardens, while Norman, Oklahoma is roughly 1,500 miles from South Florida. 310 p.m. The Gatorade coolers on the sidelines at Sun Life Stadium are already getting quite a workout, and kickoff of the Orange Bowl is about an hour away. Put simply, its hot in South Florida. The temperature on the field was 83 degrees at 3 p.m., and factoring in the 71 percent humidity made it feel like 89 degrees outside when the Tigers and Sooners were going through their warmups. It is unseasonably warm, even for South Florida, with some weather stations around the area reporting record highs for this date.

  • The Nebraska football team made a big jump in head coach Mike Rileys second season, going 9-3 in 2016 after finishing the previous regular season 5-7.However, the Huskers were left with a bitter taste in their mouths after sputtering to the finish line. Blowout road losses to Ohio State and Iowa spoiled a promising 7-1 start.Nebraska fans have plenty of reason for patience given the improvements in the win-loss column and on the recruiting trail. As we saw with the previous staff, 9-3 records will only cut it for so long.Article continues below ...The program continues trending upward, but the Big Red will need to see significant improvements on the field if it intends to move into the upper echelon of college football. Here are five position groups that need to take their play to the next level in 2017 for the Huskers to start playing championship-caliber football.Offensive LineNebraska offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh has been a treat for fans and media alike since he arrived at Nebraska two seasons ago His personality seems befitting of a man holding the same position as Milt Tenopir once did.His line had a rough 2016 season, though. The fall hype for this young-but-promising group may have been a bit premature. Some of their struggles can certainly be blamed on injuries, but even when guys became healthy toward seasons end, it didnt look like the strong unit fans thought it might, particularly in the run game.To their credit, Husker coaches consistently committed to running the ball this year MiKyle McIntosh Jersey, but this didnt always look good. Against Wyoming, Oregon, Illinois, Purdue, Maryland and Iowa, Nebraska averaged almost a yard per carry less than those teams allowed on average over the course of the season. While Nebraska lost only one of those games, an effective, clock-milking run game could have put several of those contests away much earlier. Better offensive line performances also might have flipped the script in a nail-biter against the Badgers and made a game out of the laugher in Columbus. Some might argue that the lack of an elite running back was more to blame. However, according to Football Outsiders, the Huskers consistently ranked below average in advanced statistical categories that specifically measure offensive line performance. No matter how good your backs are, there has to be a quality line to block for them. With guys like Nick Gates, Tanner Farmer and Jerald Foster leading the way, Nebraska seems to have enough youth and talent across the line to make a jump in 2017.Next Running BackBruce Thorson-USA TODAY SportsRunning backTerrell Newby was a major bright spot for Nebraska in 2016, especially considering the marginal play of the offensive line. However, even Newby had his struggles , and the senior wont be on the roster next year. The race to win the starting spot should come down to Tre Bryant and Devine Ozigbo, but neither has locked down the lead role.Bryant showed flashes of brilliance as a true freshman but also had some early-season fumbling issues and averaged a modest four yards per carry on 43 attempts The talent is there, but not a lot of production yet.Ozigbo essentially began the year as a co-starter with Newby, but after an ankle injury sidelined him for a few games, he saw the field sparingly even after returning to health. He ended up getting fewer than half the carries Newby received and wasnt able to average even four yards per rush.Which of these guys will step up CanMikale Wilbon, a former 4-star recruit with speed and agility to burn, finally climb the depth chart He has been inconsistent so far in his career but is a dangerous weapon when on the field Pharaoh Brown Jersey. If Bryant and Ozigbo cant take control of the top spot, dont count Wilbon out.Regardless of who ends up winning the job, one of these guys ideally needs to stand out from the others by the beginning of the 2017 season. It time for Nebraska to have The Man at running back again.Next QuarterbackBruce Thorson-USA TODAY SportsQuarterbackSenior quarterback Tommy Armstrong improved drastically from 2015 in a couple of areas, most notably by cutting his interception total in half. However, Armstrong and fellow senior Ryker Fyfe combined to complete just 50.8 percent of their passes. That kind of number is not going to keep defenses from selling out to stop the running game in 2017. It probably contributed to some of this season below-average rushing numbers. The offensive line and running backs had their issues, but life gets harder for those guys when the offense completes only half its passes. The quarterback position is inherently high-pressure, but the winner of the 2017 Big Red quarterback battle — most likely junior transfer Tanner Lee or redshirt freshman Patrick OBrien — may have an even bigger load on his shoulders than many other college quarterbacks. Not only will either Lee or OBrien be getting his feet wet as the new starter, theyll be doing so while the staff transitionsaway from a style tailored to Armstrong running ability. The change will be much better for both players in the long run, but there could be some wrinkles to iron out at first. On top of that, the winner will have a lot of new faces to throw to, as three of the Huskers top four wideouts will be graduating along with the top three tight ends.Stanley Morgan Jr. and DeMornay Pierson-El are proven targets, but while the receiving corps does not lack talent behind them, it does lack experience. The new starting signal-caller must dramatically improve the efficiency of the passing game in short order while throwing to a fresh crop of receivers. If successful, Nebraskas new guy will become and instant fan favorite. If not, critics will be coming out of the woodwork immediately. Either way, the team will go as its quarterback goes yet again.Next Defensive EndBruce Thorson-USA TODAY SportsDefensive EndWhile Nebraska was surprisingly effective at getting after the quarterback in 2016, the Huskers top two sack artists are both seniors. One is not even a defensive end.The lone returning starter, Freedom Akinmoladun has recorded 7.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hurries and a forced fumble in two seasons. There are no other ends on the roster with even one career sack. Akinmoladun may be a breakout candidate for 2017, but he wont be able to do it alone. The question is, who will step up The Huskers have three talented young ends in redshirt freshmen Alex Davis and DaiShon Neal along with sophomore Sedrick King. Each will get a long look. Ideally, one or two of them would make a big jump during the upcoming offseason. 2017 could also be the year AJ Natter comes into his own as a senior, but he been hampered by injuries for much of his career and didnt play much this season. It doesnt help that the Big Red just lost the commitment of defensive end Robert Porcher IV, who may have the size to play early in college. No matter who ends up starting, defensive line coach John Parrella will be tasked with developing some raw talents into difference-makers right away.Nebraska does have pass-rushing skill at DT and proved it can manufacture pressure with blitz packages this season. If the defense wants to go from good to great in that category, it will need some defensive ends to separate the Blackshirt defense from the pack and prove they can put heat on opposing quarterbacks while holding down the fort against the run.Next Special TeamsBruce Thorson-USA TODAY SportsSpecial TeamsWhen a coach who is making almost half a million dollars per year to put all his time and energy into special teams is relieved of his duties, a message is sent is loud and clear.Thats not to say Nebraskas special teams were bad across the board. The Huskers got a great performance from kicker Drew Brown, who nailed all 35 of his extra point attempts and made 11-of-13 field goal attempts. Freshman punter Caleb Lightbourn also performed admirably, if not consistently, in the wake of the devastating loss of Sam Foltz.Tre Bryant proved to be a capable kick returner, and we even saw glimpses of the lightning DeMornay Pierson-El flashed during his true freshman year before being perplexed by injuries the following season.More from Husker Corner12 21 Nebraska Football Position Groups that Need to Step Up in 201712 19 Huskers Baskteball Lose A Stunner To Gardner-Webb12 17 Nebraska Football Three Key Match Ups In Music City Bowl12 16 Nebraska Basketball How The Huskers Can Get Back On Track Against Gardner-Webb12 16 Nebraska Football Recruiting Walking the Dead Period Roundup EditionThose things aside, Nebraska got consistently average play from a group that needed to be an X-factor week in and week out. That, combined with various untimely miscues throughout the season, culminated in Bruce Reads dismissal as special teams coordinator. The punt team allowed over 11 yards per return and was one of just five teams nationally to give up three blocked punts. Even with Pierson-el waiting deep, the punt return unit averaged only seven yards per attempt. Those ugly numbers highlight the struggles the special teams faced in 2016.Riley is shifting philosophies to adopt an all-hands-on-deck approach for 2017. Nebraska needs the new style to result in marked improvement if it wants to beat elite teams and take home hardware on a consistent basis.
